Trial Practice

Gilliana Shiskin’s trial practice has ranged from the extensive disclosure review, legal research and months of preparation required for multi-week murder trials, to defending clients on seemingly less serious summary offences which would, however, have significant, and often disproportionate negative consequences for that accused. Clients quickly realize the seriousness, concern, and commitment with which Gilliana treats their individual case.

Gilliana’s attention to a detailed evaluation of all relevant disclosure, exploration of all legal and procedural avenues of defence, strength in legal research, her analytic and practical approach to crafting an argument for oral and written submissions ensures her clients can be confident in her representation of their matter.

Appellate Practice

Gilliana’s academic and practical experience with oral and written advocacy developed from her undergraduate and graduate education. The extensive research and written assignments from her schooling, combined with many years of practical experience delivering oral and written advocacy in a professional services industry, serve as a strong foundation for Gilliana’s
appellate practice.

Practice Profile

Gilliana has represented clients at the Alberta Provincial Court, the Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench, and the Alberta Court of Appeal.  She earned her Juris Doctor degree at the University of Calgary, and is a member in good standing of the law society of Alberta.

Gilliana has represented clients on a variety of criminal offences, including drug-trafficking, weapons offences, theft, break and enter, as well as murder and sexual assault.

Founded on Gilliana’s previous career in professional services, business management, and human resources, she is empowered with the experience and tools to address the serious issues and challenging complexities that face an individual charged with criminal offences.  Gilliana believes strongly in her duty to assist, inform and advise her clients so they understand the legal proceedings, their options, and the potential consequences of various outcomes.

Gilliana is passionate about being a criminal defence lawyer because injustices in the legal system disproportionately affect Indigenous people, less advantaged persons, and those who suffer from addiction or mental health issues.  She is dedicated to criminal defence law because, in the words of Martin Luther King, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”  She wants to advocate fearlessly for her clients because, to quote Thomas Berger, “Our freedoms are fragile.” Gilliana understands the importance and urgency of moving her client’s matters forward as quickly as is reasonably possible because she recognizes, “Justice delayed is justice denied.”

Gilliana’s commitment to providing her clients with the highest level of representation is backed by her passion for helping people, belief in the fundamental importance of human rights, and her fearless pursuit of justice.
